Montegonian Musicians Unite to Fight Crime: Mobay's Justice League
Overwrought by crime and violence in their metropolis, 16 Montegonian reggae artistes have elevated their voices in a song which intents to broadcast a message of oneness and hope to dwellers of Jamaica's second and once friendly city.
Labelled Love in Montego Bay - Artistes Against Violence, the undertaking is the brainchild of Maxie 'Mark X' Kerr, who co-wrote the lyrics with Kingston-based songster Patrick 'Black Pearl' Howell. The song was published on social media on Tuesday afternoon, and is already a hit.
A few of the prominent names backing up the project are: Mark X's mentor, Sonny Ranking, Queen Ifrica, White Mice, Hezron, Shuga, Peter Lloyd, Mackie Conscious, ZJ Liquid, Rosh Rebel, Imeru Tafari and Sky Frass.
In 'Love in Montego Bay', Hezron and Shuga sing:
Tired of the killing in Montego Bay,
I pray that the shottas them will change their ways.
Exchange all the sadness for a smile on your face ,
And bring back the unity in Montego Bay
Mark X, who was born in Kinlos, Trelawny, but grew up in Montego Bay, is certain that no one person or establishment can make the changes required to eliminate crime in his dear city, and desires a return to the era when the village raised the child.
"Montego Bay is our beloved child. And we, the Montegonians, are the village," he told Media.
Mark X argued that the return of normalcy to his dearest Montego Bay can't be left entirely to the police or the national security minister, Dr Horace Chang. Anxious for a lasting answer, one that will afford the town's youths optimism, Mark X contended that the city has been hemorrhaging for far too long. He said that residents needed to reassess their actions, and start displaying love for humanity, so unity can be attained.
The St James Police Division recorded 160 murders in 2021, which represents 33 more than the former year. Cases of shooting declined by 31 per cent, with 108 cases recorded during the year.
Queen Africa and Imeru capture the crime problem facing St James in the their verse:
Hey, body pon body can't count the amount,
All the family members in the amount.
Death a pass through a clear the place out,
tell the shottas them fi change them route
Tell a friend, tell a friend a time to be wise,
All them a do a mess up the paradise,
Anna COVID alone a mek death toll a rise
Mobay open unnu eyes.
Ranking, once of the duo 'Pants and Sonny', is trusting that the song will tug at the heartstrings of individuals who are causing havoc in the city.
"My dream is [that] it should reach a few of these guys, [and] that by repeatedly hearing the song it will build some type of love in their hearts, and that over time we will see a reduction in crime, the gun shooting and the violence," Ranking said.
"Everybody wants the crime and violence to cease. It may not happen overnight but my hope is to touch even one of these guys," he added.
Mackie Conscious, who played an integral role in the project, said he was elated to lend his voice to the cause.
"The aim of this project is try to bring back the peace to Montego Bay. It was easy for me to be a part of this project," he stated.
He exalted Mark X for initiating the idea and not posing and watching his city ruined.
"Mark X has just started. He wants the ears of Minister of Entertainment and Culture Olivia 'Babsy' Grange and the Jamaica Tourist Board, as well as Minister Chang. I want to see how the music video can be used on their platforms to better reach a wide cross-section of the Jamaican population," Mackie Conscious said.

Crystal's Clarity
Novel Pictures and Thousands of Words
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
~Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Meet Crystal Evans, an author from a small district in Westmoreland, Jamaica. Iconic and iconoclastic are words that could be used to describe her. She is clearly emerging in new West Indian literature. She is an advocate for Jamaican literature and black women in the arts—she is establishing her voice among a flock of Caribbean authentic voices. Persistent in her craft, she has been writing for over fifteen years. Literature is her only forte, she is an established blogger, software creator, web-entrepreneur among other things.
Easy to read, her prose are chock filled with elements of contemporary Jamaican society and culture. As you may be able to tell by now her prose does wax poetic and her pallet is dancehall spiced with some RnB. Somewhere between Ms. Kitty and Carla Moore, meets Mills and Boons, meets Issa Rae's Insecure. Every author's dream is to capture the zeitgeist (spirit of the times), and her work undoubtedly does that.
Great literature gives you insight into the psyche of the author and the society it evolves from, Ms. Evan's body of work provides a time capsule of Jamaica lifestyle from the late 80s to now. It can be a daunting task to take on writing as a career in Jamaica but this rubenesque lady has the gusto and fortitude to do it in Jamaica and rural Jamaica at that. Various times and a variety of people, even family members encourage those of us in fields to opt for greener, cashy-er pastures, so too it was with this indomitable author. Economics can be a bitch, but it's one the gifted storyteller conquers with wit, lateral thinking, diversification and the craftiness of Anansi.
Me, personally think, writing puts authors in very vulnerable situations. Especially when exposing your thoughts that may be unpopular. "People sometimes ask me 'why did I become a writer or why did you write this story?' Upset, some ask me 'why are your stories laced with social commentary and so many elements of life among the Jamaican working class?' Many more ask 'don't you grow tired of those themes?' Persons even ask 'are you writing about your life?'" says our young western word spinner.
"Usually I'd say I wrote books for every woman with a girl trapped inside that some man once told that she was not good enough. My aim now as I see it, is to create powerful heroines." In an age of social justice warriors, feminism and the metoo movement. Every pop culture patreon should know this theme is currently being tackled by Marvel's film Black Widow, so why not explore it through the lens of Jamaica womanhood.
A good many of her Crystal's novels are centered on her experiences growing up in rural Jamaica and one of Jamaican cultural nuclei which Westmoreland is. This lady spends her spare time with friends, hosting house parties and listening to reggae music being a voracious reader.
Playing ball with her neighbor's children on the play field and carrying water from the standpipe in the morning are some of the movies that are hung in Crystal's memory bank. Upwardly mobile, this zaftig author continued her Studies with several certifications in literature and Journalism.
She wrote several short stories during her teenage years as a pastime to buffer the tumultuous psycho-emotional atmosphere of her life. Soon she would then be blogging at the age of nineteen, with one of her most successful articles and post being one titled "Why Jamaican men hate cerebral women" that was penned after a bad date.
"Yeah, I love dancehall music not so much because of the beats but because I know that it is the real news and music of our catharsis. It is also a poetry of defiance. My writing is much like the music, it is my journey, my evolution, moving into being a better version of myself. Yet it is in defiance of people's attempt to define me. Characters that are the pivot of my books are all an extension of myself, the fantasy of me, the lives I have lived over and over again in my head. Opening one of my books is to dive deep into the depth of my mental caverns and to penetrate the threshold of my psyche."
After her forays in blogging, Crystal went on to write a novel named "Mama Brown's Family". Kicking up a literary storm that same year at twenty years old, she wrote the Jamaica Date Doctor series from Articles on her blog. It may sound impossible, but young Ms Evans has published three novels, The Barn Raiders, Night Nurse and The Country Gyal Journal. Ms. Evans contends that "...the rigors of a rural childhood has its sore points. I have spent most of my life feeling completely out of sync with the world and growing up in a semi-literate community did not help. So persons saw my academic inclination as meaning I was crazy, as 'too much book, can mad you' or so the country adage goes. No anomalous behavior on my part was allowed and if I manifested any it was interpreted as madness and gave legitimacy to the small town gossip that said I was weird and occult. I dumbed down around them to survive stigmatization and to not make my community members or family uncomfortable.
"Not having money and coming from a lower socio-economic family, growing up in a rural working class community, I know a thing or two about humanity at its most base level, unfiltered by IG filters, a life of limited or no exposure to education or progressive values. Embedded in me is the same material that 'ghetto people' are made from. I am intimately aware of what that life is like because I am a child of that process and vicious cycle. Culling a life that is very much different to how I started life is a feat but I am still a product of the way I was socialized." As Crystal has so clearly illustrated, her journey hasn't been easy.
Her career has been a study in the struggle with linguistic imperialism, a phenomena I wrote about some weeks ago. This is evident when she says "My deviation from the standard Caribbean or Jamaican literary topics, themes and norms hasn't really won me any respect from my peers. I write what I feel. I do not know anything about technique, other than what I learnt at Sixth Form doing my A-levels. I write stories, I write about life." She says.
So dear readers, give Crystal's work some support! I am sure some facet or reflection of Jamaican life or maybe femininity is in there that you will connect with. Reconnect with the past and interface with Jamaican modern urban feminism. Books are sold at local bookstores and on Amazon.
